UNIVERSITY, the Crewe-based four-piece formed of Zak Bowker (vocals/guitar), Ewan Barton (bass), drummer Joel Smith and Eddie (mascot), announce their debut album, McCartney, Itll Be OK, following last year’s incredible debut EP and a slew of shows that have them firmly established as one of the best live bands in the UK right now.
With influences from the 80s DIY noise underground, emo-core, Burroughs and obscure arthouse cinema and the likes of “Windmill”
scenesters Black Midi they’re the most exciting group to emerge from Crewe since, well, ever. The tightest of friendships thrust them together in a void of culture, where in-jokes, a fourth member who plays computer games on stage whiles they thrash out (and maybe writes all the songs!?!?!), these charismatic young upstarts invite you into their gang, where the riffs are melodic, the lyrics motional
yet humorous and the drums are set to eleven.
Recorded with producer Kwes Darko (Sampa The Great, Denzel Curry) at Damon Albarns Studio 13 in London, McCartney, Itll Be OK furthers the extremely exciting beginnings of UNIVERSITYs 2023 debut EP, Title Track, with the hooks now brighter and more melodic, the breakdowns heavier and the lyrics more refined. The band recorded McCartney, Itll Be Alright totally live, and it retains the delightfully unhinged energy thats defined their work so far, with everything thrillingly close to falling apart at any minute.
an explosion of energy unlike anything youve heard this year” – NME
a band trying to pummel their way out of a cage – DIY Mag
glorious desolation – So Young
